I know what you mean, OP. We're programmed to think that maturity and success should be reflected outwardly, but that doesn't always make sense for the individual. I have limited amounts of cash, so why not spend it on something that's important to me and makes me happy? Nice shoes don't really make me happy. As long as they're sturdy, comfortable and not too hideous, I'm fine. Ditto clothes. I buy almost all of mine secondhand-- not the cool, retro finds in thrift stores, just... regular clothes.

I spend my money on things that matter to me: books, food, travel, not necessarily in that order. Other people can decide where they want to allocate their funds.
