I love the new hair too, but I'm pretty sure this fanart isn't as close to the real model as you think. It's way too layered and piece-y. I think the artist might have been going in a more ambiguously bishonen direction than the actual design, which personally I think is more feminine and more in line with the 20s-ish time period on Korra.

I like it, but I do think it looks sort of weird as a style. Like it doesn't quite look like a part of her design...I guess I'm just too used to the old style.

Yes! And now I'm imagining an Azumanga Daioh/Avatar crossover. Chiyo would so be the Avatar of her era, Kagura would be a powerful water-bender, and Tomo would probably abuse any bending powers she had for constantly pestering/pranking Yomi.
