Mice, perhaps? That happened to me once. I heard it shuffling around, turned on my light, and saw a mouse dart away.

Then I had to put out mousetraps, and I slept in the living room because I did NOT want to hear them going off at night. o.O

Yeah, you may want to inspect your house for holes. We had roaches and mice for years, despite the fact the Orkin man was around a lot. Later we found a random hole on the inside of one of the sink cabinets. Plugged it up and no more critters!

Might be mice, anon. They're so small and fast that there's a good chance you might never actually see one and they can run surprisingly quietly. Check along the baseboards, in corners and in cupboards for droppings, set out traps and patch up holes with steel wool. Also be sure you're not leaving food sources out for them.
