Appropriating other cultures by things such as learning their language, wearing a sari, or even owning a rice cooker.

I'm pretty sure you're kidding about the rice cooker, but I'd love to see someone actually make that argument, even as a troll.

I'm still hoping it's a troll, but read it and weep - "I have strong feelings about rice": http://queerandpresentdanger.tumblr.com/post/70015687820

That's not getting mad at white people for owning rice cookers, though, just for making fun of them.

Ehm, who's making fun of them? Mostly I just see a bunch of people not knowing how to use one...

Re: Let's play a game.

One person made fun of them. The rest of the people either weren't familiar with them or use them to make a variety of foods rather than just rice, and the poster took as much issue with those people as with the one person who made a joke.

Which is still REALLY SILLY. And like someone else said most of them weren't even doing that.

Nothing. The very best thing is not to engage.

She's not. There was some idiot who had very strong fee-fees about white people owning rice cookers. I don't have the link, but I remember one line being: 'Not everything is for you, white people!'

Because rice cooker manufacturers care about the color of the people who buy cooking appliances.

Edit: Found the link! Behold: http://queerandpresentdanger.tumblr.com/post/70015687820

I swear I once saw someone on tumblr saying "paisley isn't for white people" (in they were very ANGRY about it too)

and I was just like "...oh my loooooooord...whyy"

What? The only people I ever see wearing it are white. Oh, tumblr. I hate that site, but I don't want it to change. Ever.

Re: Let's play a game.

Ahhh

TBH I do mostly because of the bullshit on there...and a person I knew (IMO) started to change since they started arguing with SJWs all the time. :(

*sighs*

That's sad. Bring them over to FS. Let our virulent anti-tumblr rhetoric heal them.

Re: Let's play a game.

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-09-16 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Eh...We're not really in contact. We sorta parted ways.

and besides...I felt like the whole "anti-tumblr" thing was actually the problem TBH. *shrug*

I once spent some time trying to argue with SJWs and spread more informed SJ knowledge but after a while I realized how much the negativity was getting to me by focusing on them so much.

and so I left and took care of my own blog. Ever since then I haven't bothered and only stuck to talking about an issue I had firsthand knowledge and experience with (issues related to autism/Asperger Syndrome)and only every now and then.

IMO it's important not to go far in either direction.

...Even though a lot of it was produced in Paisley, Scotland, which is, IDK... an area made up of a lot of white people?

Re: Let's play a game.

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-09-16 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Eeeyuuup

Clearly they didn't think it out beyond "I DON'T THINK WHITE PEOPLE SHOULD TOUCH THIS!!11"

Honestly a lot of the way some parts of tumblr treat "cultural appropriation" reminds me of a child going "THESE ARE MINE YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM"

Re: Let's play a game.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-16 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, yeah, paisley design came from Iranian designs, but paisley has been paisley for 200-something-odd years. It's like the same people that complain about white people drinking tea. It's not appropriation if the tea-drinking or paisley-wearing is actually ingrained into the culture.

Re: Let's play a game.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
WHY isn't paisley for Whites?

Re: Let's play a game.

Paradoxically, NOT showing an interest in other cultures is also considered wrong.

Man there was this thing about a girl who was given an - I think - shalwar kameez - by a friend to go to a wedding in her family. First, tumblr was outraged at white girl wearing traditional garments, then when they found out her friend asked her to they reached some sort of consensus where it is okay but only if given strict permission by someone in that marginalized group. Right, because that will go well.

I hope she carried a signed affidavit from her friend, authorizing her to wear the outfit, and also outlining friend's genealogical lineage to make sure that she was authorized to authorize the exemption. Can't be too careful these days.
