Movie parodies or spinoffs that were better than the original

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-09-16 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, Snakes On A Train was about a million times better than the aircraft version. For one, real snakes! Tiny, adorable little snakies. For another, less of a bullshit Hollywood veneer.

Anyone else have an example where this was the case?

Getting this out of the way first: Does anyone rembember what the movie(s) that Airplane! is based off of? Rhetorical question, but the answer is no one but movie buffs really care.

I am too young to remember such things. All I can recall was that in the "classic" section of the video store Airplane! was right next to the one it was parodying.

...But I was like eight at the time, so I don't even recall what it was.

Only because I just looked it up on Wikipedia to post Airplane! in this thread

Zero Hour!

I can google.

I didn't even know it was based on a particular movie.

Zero Hour! (exclamation point theirs, not mine) I've seen it. It's quite dull and self-important.

I've seen it and it was hilarious after having seen Airplane! Completely forgettable otherwise of course.

It was also a send-up of the Airport series of movies, the first of which was an adaptation of an Arthur Hailey novel by the same name.

I'm old. ;-)

Robin Hood: Men in Tights: "Unlike other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent!"

And I wouldn't say it's better, but I absolutely adore Galaxy Quest.

Airplane! Without a doubt. I can watch the movie anytime, anywhere.

I really like Spaceballs even though I've never been a fan of Star Wars (I know enough about the movies to get the references.)

This is me too. I actually saw Spaceballs before I even saw the whole original trilogy.

Needless to say I was pretty unimpressed with the Wars.

I'm not a fan of most Frankenstein adaptations but I love Young Frankenstein.

I will back you up on this. Also Blazing Saddles is pretty much my favorite western.

Weeeell I like both the Magnificent 7 and Stargate TV series better than the movies, but that's not quite what you were asking I think.

The 'Librarian' movies are in the Indiana Jones vein, and while I'm not sure I like them MORE I really love them a lot. More than made-for-tv greenscreen ahoy C-list actors deserve probably. WHY DO I LOVE THEM SO MUCH???

Vampires Suck was head and shoulders better than Twilight. The actress who plays faux!Bella had Kristen Stewart's mannerisms down cold, and made them funny without taking them over the top.

I have never seen Twilight (aside from a few five second clips) but I can't imagine it would be hard to beat.

I'm someone who finds the Twilight movies legitimately entertaining (usually in an unintentional way, but still) and I still agree. It's always fun when the parody has better actors than the original. Better looking, too, lol.

Fatal Instinct is the greatest movie that movied. It's infinitely better than the already awesome movies it's based on.

Spaceballs.

Paranormal Activity is already pretty shit, so it's not surprising that A Haunted House comes off as pretty swell. Oh, also, I did like the Scary Movie with Leslie Nielsen and Charlie Sheen a lot.

And so far Canadian Big Brother is the best for casting (bb14's is great too though).

I'm pretty much convinced that Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the best film adaptation of the Arthur stories in existence. It may actually be the best film adaptation of the Arthur stories possible, but there's no way to prove it.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights was worlds better than Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

The Simpsons parody of Kubrick's The Shining was truer to the book than the actual movie it's parodying.

The movie probably wouldn't have been as good if it had been more faithful IMO

are we talking about something's quality as an adaptation, or as a work of art
