I think the reason a lot of people (myself included) don't like IAWL is because they're more familiar with spinoffs, where the rules are generally way different. You know the character, so you don't spend 45 minutes having to learn the backstory, and generally rather than getting rejected by people who don't know who he is and think he's some weirdo, the character will either be invisible or an AU version of themselves. I mean, yes, the movie is also very dark and that's largely why I don't like it, but I have to wonder if the lighter and softer versions of it didn't also spoil the mood.
