Personally I'm a lot like you, anon. I don't like being comforted. If I'm hurt in any way, I prefer to be left alone and I most certainly don't want to be touched. But I'm also aware that a lot of people aren't like that (as shown by the fact that I had to teach all of my friends not to touch me when I hurt myself).

One of the reasons I like it in fanfic is because it's a good trope to work with when a ship isn't together yet. It's a good, realistic, often in character way to make them touch each other when they usually wouldn't do that yet, a way to make them acknowledge their feelings for each other and the fact that they worry and care about each other, and to behave in maybe more tender ways than they usually would. This especially goes for some of my ships who are somewhat emotionally constipated and wouldn't under normal circumstances behave that way. So one of them getting hurt and the other taking care of them is often the only way to get them closer to each other.

I'm sort of the opposite: I personally greatly prefer h/c to be in gen fic -- in shippy fic I find it has a tendency to feel sort of immature and too much of a "means to an end" to me. I prefer my shippy pairings to acknowledge their feelings in a more explicitly romantic fashion, to mark it as different from platonic love, and I don't really want them feeling turned-on or romantic-feeling by the sight of each other in pain or something (I don't like that even in mainstream media).

But when it comes to friendship or other types of relationships, I definitely agree with what you mention about the appeal two characters acknowledging how much they care about each other in a IC way, showing it more tenderly than they usually would, etc. I also really like it between people who don't really like each other (or pretend not to like each other, or just have some sort of hang-up about each other) in canon.
