People rave about this fanfic but I honestly have trouble getting into it. It's a real shame, too, because what I have seen actually looks decent. :(

I squeed when I saw this

EIEIEI I love this series. I love it! (though I do agree with your criticisms looking back at it. THO last I knew...I think Stuart or Torvald was gay and survived.) I love their treatment of the American Wizard World and how they made it parallel the British Ministry of Magic so much. I love Alexandria as a character because (in my personal opinion) I feel like they handled her well and averted making her a Mary Sue. I love the story itself and I just I love this fic for existing. It's like THE fic I could point to as an aversion of the idea that "all OC centric fics suck" that people seem to have. I mean sure it has some flaws like any other fic...but....I don't feel like saying "it sucks" would be true because it has a good concept and good characters. It's also way more nuanced than Harry Potter itself was.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was Stuart! That's what I meant by "initial use;" they did include a gay character later. There's also the possibility of Anna and Alex ending up together (which I like, as much as I hate that phrasing).

I agree with pretty much everything you wrote, though! It tells a great story and uses great characters, despite the flaws I mentioned in the secret.

Ah right. Must have missed that. and that would be interesting.

Yeah. It's pretty awesome and like... until I get canon saying otherwise THIS is my idea of what the American Wizarding world is like.

I see some fics where America is treated as "just much more open minded and progressive by default." and that just seems kinda...weird to me. America now isn't exactly a golden land of open-mindedness in the real world is it?

I've really enjoyed reading the AQ series (though I also agree with your cons) and i found it to be in a sense more realistic than the HP books. They do feel darker than the HP series in some regards, but I love the plot as a whole and really enjoy the various plot twists. I'm looking forward to book 5 in early 2015 (I think!)!

Ugh, TV Tropes.

lol, wow. I never read this, but I read the author's blog... and yeah, they're definitely more sympathetic towards conservative political leanings. so I can see the cons.
