This.

Also I love that throwaway bit about SJWs and Moore. I'm not a SJW and I dislike Moore too. He's a self-important hack with a rape fetish. He has some good work under his belt (Swamp Thing for example) but so much of it is just... Alan Moore.

I like him personally. I have at least some degree of positive feeling about everything I've read of his, and some of it I think is really good. He is self-important, yes, and all of his work is definitely extremely, extremely, extremely Alan Moore. But he's a talented writer and the things that make his work so Alan Moore are mostly interesting to me.

But fair enough, I can completely get why someone wouldn't enjoy his stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I do like some of his stuff, like the aforementioned Swamp Thing.

And at least he's not Mark Millar.

Yeah, thank God for small mercies, I guess.

Guh. Mark Millar.

Mark Millar is basically the worst.

Oh shit, I forgot about that.

Well, I'll say that I think Mark Millar's writing is the worst, at least I think so. It's so fucking mean-spirited.

OP

Yeah, this is me, as well. Though I do find a lot of Moore's other stuff more squicky to me, which. Yeah. IDEK why. You would think it would be the opposite? For me, the reams of appendices and notes and research makes From Hell far less gratuitous than most of Moore's other stuff.

I can see how that would be. Maybe it makes it more grounded or specific somehow? IDK.

But like I say, Moore's a writer where I can totally understand people not liking him.

This happens everyday though. It never went away.

I like you. Let us be friends now.

Moore's stuff varies on a few gradients:
his own creations > > > someone else's
supergrimdark < < < civilized
clever > > > mean
respectful development of other's concepts > > > trashing everything because Alan Moore knows better than everyone

Where he becomes too annoying is a matter of opinion. I can take Halo Jones because it doesn't feel like he's demolishing someone else's stuff. I can respect some of this Swamp Thing even though he is. His Marvelman, on the other hand, is almost an argument for better protecting trademarks from unauthorized fanfiction.

A lot of his problem is that he made so much money "reinventing" existing properties that he of course didn't own the rights to, and being told meanwhile that he was a matchless genius, better than everyone else in comics. He went a bit madder than he was.

Eh, I definitely have SJW tendencies and I'm a huge fan of this era of Moore.
