From my general understanding of it it seems to be when you're doing something that mocks or downplays something important to another culture, not when you're using something for practical purposes. For example, dressing up as a religious figure from another religion for Halloween and making a fool out of yourself would be pretty rude, but using a rice cooker (as in yesterday's thread) is definitely NOT appropriation. Rice cookers are fucking useful, yo.

I would also fall on the line of "dreadlocks are not cultural appropriation". It's hair, for fuck's sake. I don't think they look good (on black OR white people, it's just personal preference) but seriously it's been a popular hairstyle for years now.

I haven't given that one a lot of serious thought, though, because I've been more concerned about the totally ridiculous over-reactions to it people have expressed...

Is there anything that says a white cannot be a rasta? So long as you pay homage to Haile Selassie and cannabis, and stay away from saying whitey is keeping you down, then it doesn't matter what color your dreadlocked ass is.

I think it means an adherent of the religion Rastafarianism (sp?)?

...you know, I just realized that I've been mentally confusing Rastafarianism with Pastafarianism for a long time now. (I'm assuming the latter's name was modeled from the former)

Yes it is. (Also, yes, Marley was a Rastafarian.)

An Afro-Caribbean and Ethiopian religious movement closely associated with Reggae. Bob Marley is probably the most famous in the U.S. Dreads are encouraged based on some old-testament passages, but they're not exclusively a Rastafari thing.

Here is a show with a Medieval Rasta as part of it. Rastifarianism is very Popular in the UK (mainly because it was seen as a way to protest Thatcherism in the 1980s and neo-Thatcherism in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s) and also because it gave a (semi)legal way to smoke cannabis.
