I think the line is when you are taking something from a culture and use it for something that it was not intended for. Especially when your attention is for entertainment.

Like taking a war bonnet or a rosary and using it as a fashion accessory. A war bonnet is a document of a warrior's bravery (like medals on a soldier's chest) and a rosary is a prayer aide. To use them as fashion accessories is to use them in a way that they were not intended to be used for only for wearer's entertainment, in this case fashion. To me, this is appropriation.

Now if people are taking things from different cultures and using them for they were intended to be used as I have no problem with this. Like some non-Native American using a dream catcher over their bed to keep the nightmares at bay, I have no problem with. Someone using a dream catcher as an ornament on their rear view mirror because it looks "super cute." Yeah, you are not using it as it is supposed to be used.

So, are you against fashion incorporating elements of military regalia from the designer's own nation?
