Well, IMHO, most Westerns are very male focused, a lot of times the characters are cookie cutter archetypes, and it's a lot of gun battles and revenging the death of a woman, and they often lack humor and wit.
Deadwood has a lot of female protagonists that I really enjoy; it's not an epic good against evil story (who's good? who's evil?); all the characters are morally complex and complicated; and it's funny in an almost Wildean way.
