Well, the series premise is basically a Dracula vs. Us type deal. Roughly every one hundred years, Dracula and his castle (Castlevania) reappear on the earth and seeing as he's, y-know, evil, he has to be stopped. Normally the protagonists are from a family called Belmont, who have been fighting Dracula for centuries, although sometimes other people are pulled into the fight as well.

In Symphony of the Night, the Belmont hunter of that generation goes missing, and right around that time Castlevania shows back up (rather off-schedule, IIRC.) Said Belmont's sister-in-law heads off to Castlevania to either find him or if need be fight Dracula. At the same time, Dracula's son Alucard wakes from what was intended to be an eternal sleep. Sensing his father's reappearance in the world he too sets off for the castle with intent to send Dracula back to Hell.
