Honestly, I don't remember it specifically... Oh, wait, it's the pedophile one that wasn't in the Adept series, right? I think it's fairly revolting that someone so misogynistic can defend a stance of "well, the man was only doing what the girl wanted him to!" Then again, I'm smarter now than I was when I was fourteen, and I can barely understand how I missed the sexism the first (and second, maybe third) time around his novels...

My favorite work of his isn't even solely his-- it's the collaboration with Mercedes Lackey, If I Pay Thee Not In Gold.

Yeah. The whole way his sexism shines through his work never was appealing; but I never read Anthony in order to find appealing, mind expanding texts. He was always straightforward amusement, minus the fact he... killed the female characters. Figuratively.

If I Pay Thee Not In Gold was interesting, to me, because of the tropes of fantasy it did not follow. (She didn't fall in love with the slave, the solution wasn't easy, she never returns home, etc.).

Hah, that's true. I have to say, I honed my punnish teeth on Xanth pretty adeptly, and I still dole them out with groan-inducing frequency. :D

I liked how it bucked the tropes, yes, and I really liked the characters a lot. (I could go on, but no one wants me to!)

I still own the Incarnations of Immortality series, and I break it out from time to time when I need some good old comfort fantasy to chew on. And I found the Mode book I didn't have in a used bookstore, but I haven't made time to read the series in full yet.

The Mode series I enjoyed because of the travel between... modes, but also a handful of the characters. Primarily, at first, the horse, because... well, I love horses, even if I didn't love his society.

"Pay Thee Not In Gold" was fun. I liked how the demons worked in that world, and the way different societies were handled. They sure made entire equality seem like a laugh.

I don't know if I ever read Incarnations of Immortality, outside of the one about the Earth mother. That's the series with "Death Rides a Pale Horse" or something, right?

On a Pale Horse is the first one, yes. It's a very interesting series, the way the roles are filled and successors chosen and the whole concept of these unchangeable, undeniable facets of life-- Good, Evil, Death, Time, Fate, War, Nature-- all being actual people. And I like how magic and science have co-evolved and compete in that universe. :)

Yes, in Nature, the coexistence and ramifications of both existing was interesting for me as well, but sadly, I felt like coming in with Nature gave me the portion I was most interested in right from the start.

It's a very intertwined story-- the woman who becomes Nature is a child in the book of Fate (with a tangled skein), and is close with her cousin, who is important in Death's book (on a pale horse), and her daughter is important in Time's book (bearing an hourglass)-- she (Nature) also is a friend of the man who becomes War (wielding a red sword).

For Love of Evil tells the history of the man who is the Devil, and also presents his side of the first five stories, and And Eternity wraps it all up, more or less. There's another book out now, I think, or about to be released. I don't know anything about it, though.

Anyhow... yes. I think the series is well worth reading. ;D

I read the book as well- I seem to remember his author notes talking about how people accused him of writing smut for money, and the author protested a bit too much over how when he wants money he writes, fantasy, this porn was for ART XD It was probably my first brush with tentacle-ish porn, since I read it at 15.

I went through the obsessive Anthony freak phase, too. The only books I liked enough to keep were the Incarnations series and a few of the early Xanth novels.

Did the Xanth series ever finish?

I'm not sure - I don't really keep current with most authors, and Anthony falls into the category. I never read the end of Xanth, that I know.

His author notes also, if I remember, went on at length about his views on sexual abuse and the life. Eh.
