29. Sonia was the protagonist of Castlevania Legends and allegedly the mother of Trevour Belmont a child she conceived with Alucard. Now, I'm the last person to go around labeling female characters Mary Sues, but that's what Sonia was. I think Alucard refers to her as he longingly watches her depart as his, 'beautiful vampire hunter' or something along those lines.

The game was released for Game Boy and was pretty terrible in my opinion. It was retconned along with Legacy of Darkness and Circle of th Moon about a year ago, and is the only one out of those that hasn't been put back into the storyline.

For too long the series suffered from no consistency and now we're finally seeing a structured storyline develop. The Belmonts no longer look like something out of Krull and Dracula actually has a backstory, and nothing's quite as black and white as it once was and overall the series is much better for it. While I still prefer my side scrolling dungeon crawlers to the 3-D gameplay, the series is getting better.

Thank you. You didn't have to take the time to explain that to me. :oD

I agree that all of the 3D Castlevanias are poor compared to the 2Ds, but I have hope still, like I said before.

Lol, it's fine. I'm a complete CV dork.

I'll admit that I actually really liked Lament of Innocence. The gameplay was a little redundant, but I liked the storyline and it's probably one of my favourites. Curse of Darkness on the other hand was kind of another miss. But as far as CV that I can play again and again definitely take the 2-D games.

I only played Curse of Darkness... and my sister and I (who both worked on the game) determined once we got to the final boss that there was absolutely no point in powering up the main character and hunting down secrets at all. Zero replay value. People wonder why I'm so fixated on SotN!

I didn't even finish CoD that's how horrible that game was.

SotN is by far the best and close to that in my opinion is AoS -- I've yet to play DoS because I lack a DS. :\

The early games aren't worth replaying either. I picked up a ROM of Simon's Quest about two years ago and ended up wanting to hang myself. I remember being about seven and having similar feelings.

Part of me misses Castlevania II (my first CV ever) and part of me plays Castlevania X and cringes knowing games were so much harder in large part due to the bad controls. I don't know if we were hardcore back then or just used to low standards.

Dawn of Sorrow was the first DS game I ever played... it was ok, but PoR was so much better. It's a must-have, if you do ever consider picking up a DS. (Igarashi said they were going to make another DS-only CV!)

Re: Not the OP

Yeah it was my first CV, as well. I think the early games were just difficult by default. I've noticed that a lot of the first games I played were almost impossible to beat. Bad controls, lack of information ... how if you hit the water you'd die. I guess we didn't know any better.

A DS is definitely on my list especially now that they have the new streamlined version out.

And they come in all manner of pretty colors now! :oD

The things that kill me about the old-school controls of Castlevania X right now are the stairs (gotta press up, or else you fall off and then Lord knows what happens next), the timing (Maria/Richter is always slower to the punch than the enemy, though Maria less so), and not being able to improve one's life bar as one progresses. I managed to unlock SotN though, which was the main thing. ;o)

People can say what they will about games not being as challenging these days... I think they're better. Technology is able to give us a more fluid and faster-paced gaming experience, and there can't be anything wrong with that, can there?
