AMEN!

I grew up watching Doctor Who and have loved it for years prior to the new series. Living with a family of geeky sci-fi fanatics and not a soap opera in sight; I had always been into Doctor Who only for the sci-fi. But something about the Doctor/Rose dynamic won me over! I have always seen his companions as just that-- companions. Friends who helped him along the way, the romance didn't really occur to me (maybe because I was too young!) but with Rose it seemed like the Doctor had found something special in her and alien or not, a man is a man and he fell in love with her.

I'm not sure why we are to begrudge him this! It seems to have divided the fandom. They're either in denial that he could fall in love at all; think the history of the show would be completely ruined by his wanting to stay with one woman; or like me, see that in a modern version of Who some changes to the tried and tested formula don't spell the end of the universe! Letting him fall in love showed a wonderful side of him and his character became deeper and more likable because of it. It fleshed him out, and made him seem more human and yes yes yes, I know he isn't human. But he has human qualities and falling in love with Rose brought more of those out.

I love that scene in season 2's 'School Reunion' when Rose brings up the fact she would one day be dumped like Sarah-Jane. She says "I've been to the year 5 billion, but this--this is really seeing the future, you just leave us behind. Is that what you're gonna do to me?" and then the Doctor says pretty quickly and resolutely "No... not to you."

In his mind she was different. She wasn't like all the other companions, and to people not so stuck in the past and willing to accept changes and bring new life to the series-- we know why she was different. :)

That scene in School Reunion is also pretty heartbreaking, because it gave a tiny insight into why he left all the others behind in the first place. When he tells Rose the 'curse of a Time Lord'. Revealing why didn't form lasting attachments to people because, and I quote "I don't age I regenerate, but humans decay-- you wither and you die. Imagine watching that happening to someone you--" and he stops!
100% sure he was going to say 'love'. He knows this will happen to Rose too but he's ignoring it, risking all that hurt of watching the woman he loves "wither and die" because he can't face up to leaving Rose behind like he did so many others before her.

I really am enjoying this new side to the Doctor, why everyone else just wants the same old same old over and over again for 30 years and beyond I really can't understand. Take a risk and enjoy it for what it is!

God I'm so glad Rose is coming back. <3
