I don't think anyone goes into it intentionally wanting to dislike characters (at least I don't think so). Sometimes a character rubs you the wrong way, though. Like, I really don't like Xander on Buffy. I don't try to dislike him, I just do. He has personality traits that I don't like that are never really called out by canon. And I wouldn't say I like disliking him, but I do like ranting about him because I like talking about the reasons I don't like him.

I do think there are people who enjoy disliking characters and actively intensify their dislike to the point of bashing, though I still don't think those people start out wanting to dislike anyone. But that isn't everyone who dislikes characters.

Intellectually, this makes sense, but I pretty much never feel like this because even characters who rub me the wrong way usually have several good traits and moments that balance their bad parts out, so I don't dislike them as a character, I just kind of dislike the writing. Like, I also dislike some of Xander's character traits and some stuff he's done bugs me a lot, but he also has character traits that I love and has awesome wonderful moments too, so I can't dislike *him*, I just dislike Joss/the writing team for not writing his negative traits in a satisfying way. I only dislike characters with zero redeeming qualities, which is rare.

Disliking a character takes too much effort and is too much of an annoyance. Watching a show where I dislike a character irritates me. It's much easier and more enjoyable (for me) to figure out a way to like them instead. Maybe I just tend to give much more weight to positive moments than to negative ones?

For me it is about the narrative calling them out. When the writers/other characters justify the bad traits of the character, I get irritated. Particularly some traits more than others. It is a visceral reaction that I can't help. It doesn't usually ruin a fandom for me if there are enough parts about it I do like. Xander is pretty much the only thing I don't like about Buffy, so I'm happy enjoying the rest of it.
