Fucking this.

It's not that the ideas or the history behind some of these concepts aren't worth the time or aren't valuable, it's that tumblr takes bits here and there are it pleases, decontextualises and devalues so many of these issues into reblogs and soundbites so it doesn't mean shit.

And then when you call on these people to really defend the corner or have any nuanced ideas about the things they're supposed to feel strongly about they can't do it. It's a fucking joke, makes people lazy, thin-skinned and the opposite of what activists for these kinds of causes should be.

Also TBH it's pretty typical of them to hear ANY criticism of their position and jump to "you just hate the idea of [group] having rights!"

Honestly it says a lot about someone when they always hear criticism and jump to the conclusion of "you don't want me to have rights DON'T YOU?!!!". And what it says isn't exactly good. More like alarming.

But we don't actually know if that's the situation, or if the OP is just someone who shuts down all conversations by playing the devil's advocate or some shit.

Tumblr definitely fosters some horribly wrong-minded, echo chamber, *fingers in ears* BS, but it's not like it's the only place on the internet that does. Or the only place anywhere (have you seen Fox News, ever?)

This happens EVERYTIME someone has an issue with tumblr social justice. Someone comes up saying "but what if the OP is doing something shitty,YOU DON'T KNOW THEY MIGHT BE"

Because heaven knows tumblr warriors can't stand the thought that they're wrong. It ALWAYS has to be "but what if the OP is the bad one"

Maybe the OP is just tired of seeing this person's dumbass drama on their dashboard. Also, done right, "playing devil's advocate " isn't supposed to "shut down conversations" sure some people do it wrong but I know a friend who sometimes plays devil's advocate with me or in our group, and it usually gets me to THINK about what I'm saying.

If you think presenting another argument is "shutting down" a conversation, then you're probably crappy at debating or your points are weak. If someone having another argument/opinion is "shutting you down", than maybe you are the problem.

Why does this matter to you? I'm just pointing out that the OP might have a skewed perspective, or might be pushing her friend in order to get a rise out of her. I've seen people do it before. I've /done/ it before.

So this. A million times a million.
