This is ag college; it's an intro weed science class in the agronomy department. It's only one credit and half a semester, but it's kind of cool to look at a mess of weeds and have them not just be a mess of weeds anymore. Of course the emphasis is on weeds of crop fields and turf grasses, but there's some overlap with noxious invasives like garlic mustard and leafy spurge that are choking indigenous plant communities.

Yesterday we learned to tell poison ivy from boxelder (very, very useful!) and heard a funny story: common sunflower (the roadside sunflower, not the huge ones that are raised for seed) is listed as a noxious weed in our state because a farmer had a grudge against his neighbor and was looking for a way to make trouble for him. The neighbor apparently had a lot of sunflower on his farm ground, so the guy with the grudge wrote to this state legislator he had some sort of in with, and convinced him to introduce a proposal to add sunflower to the noxious weed list, so that the neighbor with the sunflowers would get a visit from the county weed control officer.

Now, it happens that sunflower is the state flower of the state to the southwest of us. So somebody in their state House introduced a resolution to institute a hunting season for our state bird...the goldfinch.

:O That is a hilarious story. Are the states Kansas and Iowa?
