What assumptions do you make about people's identies online?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-20 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Like, I assume everyone on F!S is white, in college, from the US, and female until proven otherwise..

Re: What assumptions do you make about people's identies online?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-20 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a lot of assumptions! I do tend to think people here are female unless stated otherwise, but that's about it as far as I think.

3 out of 4, not bad.

I always assume most people are female in fandom, especially when talking about fanfiction. I'm rarely wrong.

Definitely assume female until proven otherwise for here, and male until proven otherwise on 4chan. Personally, and I know it's usually wrong, but people who use predominantly male or female characters or avatars I'll usually assume they are male or female based on those choices.

2/4.

Unemployed and from Canada.

I don't really make assumptions in general. I don't even consider that kind of thing, if I'm having a good convo with a nonnie, I consider them as an interesting person. Things like that don't occur to me to wonder about.

I also assume female, and from the US. That's my starting point until something is mentioned to prove otherwise.

3 out of 4 isn't bad.

I tend to think that people who don't talk about social justice (In a 'oh, not that again!' kind of way, not a 'it depresses me to think about it, even if I know these things happen') are either really privileged to the point they can ignore other people' struggles, or really oblivious.

3/4 here. That's pretty good.

2 out of 4.

I assume everyone who talks about how much hot sex they're having is dating Rosie Palms.

Re: What assumptions do you make about people's identies online?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-20 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Or that they're very young and new to sex and don't realize how much sex everyone else is also having. And don't realize how little they care.

Re: What assumptions do you make about people's identies online?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-20 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I admit I assume people online are female, which I think is because I am.

Re: What assumptions do you make about people's identies online?

3/4

This isn't an assumption exactly, but I always think of people as looking like the avatar they use most frequently.

I do that too. Kallanda looks like longhair Bucky, dethtoll looks like Guy Gardner, Case is a wooper, and so forth.

Anytime Someone ends with some variation of "btw I'm a guy" my fist thought is always that they're probably not cismen. Which is just pretty awful any way you slice it. Even with the caveat that I usually assume they're Tumblr snowflakes and not actual trans people.

Really? Because that sounds to me like a cismale thing to say. I guess it depends on context.

3/4, but I graduated from college in the 80s.

I assume most of the people I talk to online or in games is female unless told otherwise. I don't assume race, nationality, or age, because I'd often guess wrong.

I'm English, but I assume that everyone else is American unless they say otherwise (sometimes, it feels like the whole world's American and that we're divided by a common language and all that). I'm older, and I'm often surprised at how young other f!sers are. I'm white, but I don't assume that other people are. I have a degree, and assume that other people do... I'm straight and cis-gendered, and tend to assume that I'm in the minority in fandom.

2/4 for me.

3/4, and soon to be 2/4. I'm agender but female-raised, and I am currently in college but am dropping out to take a full time job, since it's the better life plan for me.

Damn, it's like your PSYCHIC.

You got female right =D

Re: What assumptions do you make about people's identies online?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I assume everyone I talk to in fandom is female until proven otherwise. I'm not in any stereotypically male-heavy fandoms, though, so I don't think this is unreasonable.

4/4, if you can count that I graduated college. :) Good job!

2/4.

I assume most everyone on Tumblr or Youtube is under 21 until proven otherwise. Bunch of whippersnappers...
