Do you have issues with math in other areas, or is it just money that trips you up?

Not really? It's physically getting the money together, not the actual counting.

For starters, always have your bills sorted by denomination. All your ones in the front, all your fives right behind them, etc. If it helps, separate them with a chunk of an index card.

What about coins? I have them all together separate from the bills, but still struggle with them some. There's a lot of them, so should I maybe thin them out some?

Yes. If you've got more than about a dollar in coins (assuming you're in the US), you're weighing yourself down. Change them out with a willing cashier, or keep them at home until you have enough to roll them and trade them for bills at the bank. If you're somewhere that uses dollar coins or an equivalent, make a little compartment in your wallet to keep them separate from your small change.
