You're not an asshole, but you're failing to realize that you can stop giving gifts and feeling resentful about it and shifting the responsibility to your friend. It's kind of crappy that your friend doesn't reciprocate, but you know you're not supposed to give people presents just so they feel obliged to give you presents.

So stop. If the friend asks, shrug and smile and say you've noticed they aren't really into it like they used to be and it's only natural for people to want less stuff as they get older, so you decided to do the same. Then make plans to spend time together (if you want) instead.
