Re: FB alternatives?

Different Anon here, but from what I've seen the latest is some bs about forcing people to use their "legal name" (saying it has to match the name on your ID and CreditCards) and if it doesn't match they're going to delete the accounts. One of the reasons people are upset is because trans folks and dragqueens are some of the accounts that are told they're "fake" and being deleted. Though really I don't know how they plan to enforce this, as I know I don't like anything to my own FB to "prove" my ID.

Zuckerberg said that if you go by more than one name anywhere you "lack integrity."

lol

Now I'm wondering how they plan to enforce this, too. It sounds like a terrible decision and I don't blame some people for being upset. (Especially the ones most affected by it.)

Also LGB folks who use a separate name online to avoid getting a beating by the gaybashers in whatever redneck shitkicker burg they have ill fortune to live in, or have their rednecked shitkicking, gaybashing father or step father live in; they are all pretty put out since being outed as homo or bi sexual can destroy their lives so often have a vanilla FB account for their folks and a real account under a pseudonym for their real lives.

Facebook has always done this, as far as I know? *does not actually use the site, but has heard things* I know of at least one person who got into a snit several years ago because Facebook deleted her account for being under a fake name, which she said she had known was their policy before she created the account. (But which did not stop her from raising a stink about how unfair it was for them to, you know, actually enforce their own rules, of course.)

Hmm, I don't know what facebook is like now (haven't logged in for months, or used it regularly for years), but I've had accounts under bogus names and as far as I know, none of them have been deleted. I still get emails from facebook asking me to come back and check my wall.

I wonder what exactly the criteria for deletion is.

An aquaintance had his account deleted as well a couple of years ago. They caught on because his FB name didn't fit with his e-mail address. If the e-mails you use to create accounts don't have names in them I don't think they would have any chance of catching on, unless they request cc information to verify your ID at some point.

Ah, okay. I wasn't aware they even looked at that kind of thing, but I guess they really are trying to make everyone use their 'real' names. Maybe they will ask everyone to verify their ID as a means of 'cleaning up' their site, but I don't particularly care; I'll just delete my accounts.

It is going to be rather unfortunate for many people if they follow through with it though.

They've always said it had to be a valid name (I tried to make an account with Firstname Lastname and then Firstname Fakename and it wouldn't let me, as an example) but now it's saying you have to use your legal name. The deletions are supposedly starting in two weeks. We'll see.

Wow really? I've been using FB under my "net persona" for a couple of years. But I only use it to chat with my boyfriend, because it's convenient. I never post and I have like 5 friends. I'm probably way under their radar.

Also why would FB have your credit card information? Unless you log into a shopping site with that account? Shit's messed up.
