If your friend doesn't reciprocate and you feel bad about it, stop giving them expensive gifts! Get them something small and funny or perishable instead.

You can give expensive gifts if you really like to give them and don't expect reciprocity. But giving an expensive gift to someone with the expectation that they'll reciprocate can be an unwanted burden on that person, regardless of their financial situation. So it seems like you have to decide whether you mind the lack of reciprocity or not, and if you do, scale back the gifts.

IA. If OP isn't enjoying gift giving anymore and if the lack of reciprocation is causing lots of resentment and they can't let go of it, it's probably best if they buy something cheaper or stop altogether.
