Re: THIS IS THE WRITING THREAD!

I've been in the mood to write for some time but been too busy. But right now I'm on vacation and have all the time in the world. Still not writing. I think some of that is I really want to finish this one story before going on to anything else but I don't have any enthusiasm for it. Another part is that I can't seem to get comfortable anywhere.

On a different note, I also have a ton of OTPs/fandoms that I want to write short stories for (not PWPs or snapshots, but an actual story). I am shit at writing anything short when I come up with plots on my own. I don't have stories for these characters; I just want to write them. I've been looking at writing prompts and they all seem to be crap. The "imagine your OTP" prompts are awful. I haven't found one that works. I want an actual story but not something so involved that I'll end up writing an epic (which is kind of my default setting). I looked at lists of cliches, and they're a little better, but they're still not a story idea. It's really frustrating. Especially as some of the things I want to write are not romantic but familial and there aren't many prompts for that. AND especially as some of my fandoms are not modern and so many prompts are related to that.

Writing inspiration things do shit for me. I don't like when people just throw a picture or a word and are like: here, write about this with your characters. That holds no appeal for me. It's usually not a picture or word or whatever that appeals to me, and all it ends up being is a snapshot instead of a story. I feel like what I need is so specific that I don't know how to ask for it. I'd just like a long list of story ideas that aren't lame, aren't too specific or too vague (or there's a good mix in the list), would be great for shorter stories, but still have a plot. And of course, it has to click for the characters/fandom, which seems to sink most anything (which really shouldn't because I have SO MANY fandoms I want to write something short for).

/guess I wanted to rant. Sorry.

Hey no prob. Feel free to rant all you want. Sometimes writing is frustrating.

Also I get not always being into writing inspiration stuff and being told what to write. I sometimes hate prompts where I don't have enough freedom. When I was in second grade ,I failed a writing test because I didn't write about the prompt.(I was supposed to write about being in a hot air balloon and I wrote about a candy factory somehow hidden in the balloon. Somehow)

Aheh...but anyway sometimes you just have to find an idea that speaks to you personally? I wish I knew exactly how to help. I like looking at types of AUs myself. Or lists of one word topics that are just vague enough to do what I want with them.

..uh hope I helped. Sorry if I was annoying.

Nope, not annoying. :)

I did something like that in an art class. We needed like 7 items in the drawing but mine was perfect to me at 5 and didn't need those last two.

I think talking to people will help. I've always found the best help is when people throw ideas at me. For almost all the ideas, I won't like them, but it's so helpful to me because then I've narrowed down what it is I DO want that little bit more, which helps me craft a question that actually gets me what I want further down the line. It helps me figure out how to say what it is that I'm looking for or not looking for. It frustrates people to no end because it seems like I'm just rejecting everything but I find even bad ideas or ill-fitting ideas are great to know!

Thanks!

Ahh

I might suggest looking on TV Tropes, if you don't mind the site (I've met people who disliked or hated burning hatred for it. Me, I just take it as a source of information ) It can be fun to look at certain premise /setting tropes you like and put your own spin on them. :3

I avoid TV Tropes but only because it's like a black hole I get sucked into. Once I start, I keep clicking links and then suddenly six hours have gone by. :)

TV tropes was kind of what I was thinking of when I said lists of cliches are a great start but just not enough. The tropes are good but I just need that added little something that will make a story out of it -- especially as I am writing pre-existing characters who already fall into their own tropes. So, any character-tropes are unlikely to work because they're either OOC or just describe a pre-existing condition. Ditto a lot of the world-building elements. Maybe I'll try again and look for action-type tropes but I feel like that would be great if I already had some kind of starting point to begin with.

Ahhhh Maybe that will work.

TV Tropes is a pile of shit. If I want to actually write, I'll stay way the fuck away from it, thanks.

*eyerolls* Mm edgy.

Sure it has problems, but it also has a bunch of common premises, character types and such. It is information and CAN be useful or harmful depending on what YOU do with it.

Thinking it will automatically make you a poorer or better writer is stupid and means you're putting too much stock in it.

I know a lot of the tropes and stuff because analyzing literature and stuff is my thing so I find it very interesting , but I also know that you don't slap tropes together can call it a novel.

Also knowing these things will not automatically make you suck either because it's UP TO YOU what you make of it. Some tropes you discard, some you notice, whatever.

Have you tried something like comment-fic? http://www.livejournal.com/users/comment_fic/ Prompts of varying themes and fandoms, with a whole lot of people prompting for "any fandom, any character" with assorted degrees of vagueness or specificity.

I haven't spent too much time on comment sites but I do enjoy kink memes. Like, probably the thing I'd love most is to find a good kink meme for all the fandoms I want to write in (which the fandoms I'm talking about don't have). Then, while there would be dozens of prompts I don't like, everything would be "on topic" and it would be easier to find that one thing I'm looking for.

A cursory look of the site you mentioned has a lot of what I don't like -- really short sentences that don't really inspire a story but a moment. I'd rather not have to go through hundreds of prompts to find the few any fandom/any character prompts for the hope that there's one good one. Do they have a nice search function?

Thanks for the suggestion! I will keep it in mind.
