Honestly, I think I kind of get it. People tend to assume having a disability that can be severe means every single case is severe. So you don't want people to assume you're one of them.

And FWIW, I know people with autism/asperger syndrome and don't feel uncomfortable around them. The only time I wasn't sure what to do was when a friend had a panic attack (I'm not sure what else to call it - she wasn't stimming, but something happened that made her very very upset), and that wasn't really about me being uncomfortable as much it was wanting to help her and having no idea what to do. :(
