It is The Faculty! :) You're right about the homage aspect, which I'd forgotten about (it's been a while), which makes me think maybe it's better than I remember.

And thanks. I felt guilty as a very young adult for not connecting to my sister when I'd managed to connect really well with my brother; oddly, years and years later, it's my sister with whom I have a good relationship. But it started with this movie, and I always thought that was kind of weird.
