When you say a "walks column" is this just a weekly column about different walks or hikes in the area? Because that sounds awesome and exactly like something I would be able to do, if I could find someone to publish it.

Yes, that's right! She takes the photos and writes up the route and points of interest along the way, and has been sending them in regular as clockwork for twenty years (yes, I'm old too...) So she gets to travel in her own country as well as abroad - though it sort of turns it into a job to have to do it so regularly. IIRC she got the work by walking into the newspaper offices and asking if they wanted such a column. In fact the paper is very glad to get reliable high-quality content, so she won't be out of a job anytime soon; the money isn't great, but it was a stepping-stone to more such work.
