Not OP, but I think it more has to do with the feeling that their friend might not care as much? The OP wasn't asking for a gift back at equal value, but just something. I feel this way sometimes too. Most people don't know what to get me anyways because if I want something I usually buy it myself. I don't want anyone to spend a lot of money on me, especially if they can't afford it. But I appreciate small gestures, like a card. Even a handmade one or a note saying something nice. When they don't even do that, it makes me feel like they don't care enough to put in that little bit of effort.
