Re: Shows You Enjoy Where the Characters Aren't Likable
IMO you're right about Ianto and Tosh not having as much screentime, so there not being as much to hate. And they were pretty cute characters without anything polarizing in their background, so...they were kind of 'safe' too, but I was okay with that.
Gwen...I have nothing against the actress, but I never liked her character. The way she treated Rhys was terrible. The only reason Owen's death made me sad was because it was beautifully written, and Tosh's tears slayed me.
Re: Shows You Enjoy Where the Characters Aren't Likable
(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 02:35 am (UTC)(link)Yeeeah, I was so confused when I was actually watching the show and I couldn't figure out why I shipped Jack/Ianto when I didn't even like Jack most of the time. With the benefit of distance (I stopped watching after S3 and it's been more than enough time to think about it), I think it's because of what they had the potential to be, rather than what they were allowed to be on screen. I've noticed the fics I like tend to delve more into Jack's and Ianto's motivations, and at least acknowledge that their canon relationship isn't healthy - and preferably, fix it!
Gwen's actually my least favourite character, even over Owen. The thing is, Owen was written as an asshole. He knew he could be pretty horrible, and he was fine with that. So at least there's that consistency there. He has his moments, I guess (like in A Day in the Death, and the death scene), but overall, you know he's supposed to be the jerk of the show.
But Gwen? Consistently written to be the moral centre of the team, always the conscience, the "heart," as the showrunners put it, of Torchwood. But... she's not. She's really not. Like you said, the way she treated Rhys was horrible, and it's the main reason I dislike her. Okay, talk about how much you adore your boyfriend/fiance/husband, then turn around and flirt incessantly with your team leader and have an affair with another team member. Makes sense! And if the show had acknowledged that hypocrisy, it wouldn't have been so bad. Still wouldn't have liked her (cheating's one of my automatic nopes), but at least she'd have been consistent. But to then still treat her as some sort of moral authority...? That just gets my goat so bad I can't even *throws hands up* UGH.
Gwen inspires very negative emotions in me, what can I say. It's sad, actually. It would only have required small changes in the way she was written to make her a more sympathetic character in general (even keeping the affair, etc). But the writing was just... >P
