See, when I hear someone whining about people buying "expensive" shoes when they're poor, my immediate thought is "you've never had to suffer wearing a pair of really cheap shoes for a week's worth of 8 hour shifts".

Most poor people who buy pricy shoes aren't going out and blowing two months' rent on a pair of Manolos every season - something like that is largely a middle-to-upper-class brand of idiocy. The "expensive" shoes they're buying are usually decently constructed shoes that will allow them to do their jobs, engage in their sports, or withstand the weather in something approximating comfort, without injuring themselves, and without having to buy 15+ pairs of cheap shoes throughout the years an actually good pair of shoes will last.
