Showing how behind the times I am, but what does 'weeaboo' mean?

Assuming from context it means something like 'shallow' or maybe 'superficial', a lot of ships are based on nothing else than 'they sure are cute and would look great together', never mind the characters in question even meeting in canon. Or even being part of the same fandom, since some very popular ships involve characters which do not even belong to the same canon, so this is actually quite a common reason for shipping. Sorry, but fandom is shallow by definition...

Else we'd be occupying our time with something productive, like dealing with our real life problems maybe... Speaking for myself too! :)

Weeaboo's basically the super obnoxious type of anime fan that thinks Japan's infallible and all that jazz. Used to be Wapanese (wannabe+japanese), but 4chan word filtered it to be weeaboo and it stuck. Some anime nerds kind of reclaimed it or whatever and use it in place of anime fan/otaku.

Yup. Although for the life of me, I don't see what shipping two characters has to do with being a weeaboo or not.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Because OP only started shipping them when OP saw them drawn as animes

Oh, so they're not originally anime. Ah. Gotcha. Does their interpersonal dynamic work better if you use more anime/manga tropes?

[personal profile] juliamon 2014-09-21 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't really have any dynamic beyond "she stole a magic scroll, he was sent to retrieve it, they fought and parted ways" that I'm aware of, and even that I think was just thrown together as an excuse to make a Duel Deck set with the two of them. They have some of the least amount of interaction of any of the current characters.

I can't stand people using trash as way to describe themselves. It reeks of tumblr's self-loathing complex and gets annoying as fuck so quickly.

This secret makes it sound like they just want a pat in a back and reassurance? Though I admit that looking for warm hugs and love on this community is a pretty gutsy move, as vitriol is just as likely to result...

Generally speaking though, I agree with you.

Which fandom is this?

Reverse search says it's "Magic the Gathering: Jace vs. Chandra Duel Deck"

I really hate the word "weeaboo"

Me too. It has gotten really bad to the point than even casual fans of anime are called Weeaboo. I understand that people like that exist, but liking a current series or two, looking forward to the next Studio Ghibli movie, enjoying a nice sushi dinner every now and then, playing Pokemon and wanting to buy a cute collectable based on anime from 10-30 years ago does not a Weeaboo make.

I am not seeing the term or actual Japan obsessed people as I used too, at least not on my parts of Tumblr, mostly UK obsessed folk.

For what it's worth, I don't see the problem. I love making up personalities and back-stories for characters who appear in card games like Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh! based on their designs and attributes, and some of them end up being very shippable. If the Japanese art happened to get your engine revving when the American art didn't, so what?

I really hate what they've done with Magic cards these days.
