This is the CW. They 1) cannot afford hella epic and 2) have a vested interest in putting characters in "aspirational" clothes, i.e., things that are reminiscent of what their advertisers sell.

(I realize that sounds negative re: CW, but I think it's smart.)

:nods:

I suppose it's not particularly period, but it is very pretty, and pretty close to stylish modern clothing.

Oh, I know. I just wish the stuff Mary's poor ladies-in-waiting are frequently put in weren't so garishly ugly (and if that's where current fashion trends lie I'll happily be untrendy).

Also, freaking Vampire Diaries did better Renaissance clothing, and it's a CW show too. Couldn't they at least recycle some of those gowns?

Vampire Diaries did one episode focusing on a small group of characters -- Reign has to dress an entire court on a network budget. The only other option they have aside from creating their own aesthetic was recycling every single Tudor-era dress ever made for tv and movies; The Tudors already did that, and it had a cable budget and was filmed in Britain, where it was easier to access many of the costumes.

I'd rather have something that looks like a fairy-tale castle than have to see a show with a look identical to every other piece of work set in the time period.

iirc, Reign in particular has an official website (or maybe it's an app?) that lists where you can buy all the more modern-looking clothes on the show. Most of the ones I remember are from Forever 21.

(Does the CW have Pretty Little Liars too? Because that would explain why it has a tie-in clothing line.)

I follow the fashion-of-reign tumblr, which has a really dedicated fan combing through the clothes. She also suggests cheaper alternatives, which I love.

(PLL is a cable show so no, not on CW.)
