Re: Vent thread
(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)In regards to Scotty and Uhura, early in the film, we see that they're supposed to go on leave together and they're quite affectionate (Uhura gently touches Scotty's face). This is BEFORE they meet with Sybok. Later on, Sybok gets to Uhura (converts her) and this scene happens:
Scotty awakens to find Uhura holding him in her arms.
UHURA
(soothing)
Easy, Scotty. You're back with us.
SCOTTY
(testing her)
Uhura. I had the strangest dream. I
dreamt a madman had taken over the
Enterprise.
UHURA
Dear Scotty, he isn't a madman.
SCOTTY
(realizing she's a
convert)
He's not?
UHURA
Sybok's put us in touch with feel-
ings we've always been afraid to
express.
Uhura gives Scotty a loving look.
SCOTTY
(uncomfortable)
I... er... have to get back to the
transporter.
Scotty slips out of her arms.
UHURA
But there's so much I want to tell
you.
SCOTTY
Maybe when I'm a wee bit stronger.
I dinna think I could take it in
my present condition.
(under his breath)
Or yours.
I thought it was a really important scene because it showed how Scotty wasn't willing to take advantage of her when she was under Sybok's influence (it reminded me of a guy not taking advantage of a drunk woman). And I thought it showed how much they cared about each other. That even though there's a mutual attraction, Scotty understands that she's not fully in her right mind at the moment and thus he won't do anything. Hence why he makes that remark about her "present condition."
But this user INSISTS that Sybok MIND-RAPED Uhura and PLANTED feelings for Scotty in her head. When, in the case of McCoy and Spock, this isn't at all what happened and, especially, when Scotty and Uhura were already quite close BEFORE they met Sybok. If anything, what Sybok did is the equivalent of drugging Uhura -- of removing her inhibitions -- but SCOTTY didn't do anything to hurt her. On the contrary, I'd say he did the right thing in this situation.
And, unfortunately, I know she won't miss it…I'd put money down on it in fact. I suspect she posts here as well…on anon.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)Aw. Do you have an account here? You could post the meta on it and privately link it to your friends in the fandom as well as other Scotty/Uhura lovers. That way you may not have to deal with her shit.
Re: Vent thread
(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)I get that there wasn't a whole lot of build-up between them (although there are some cute scenes of them together in the TV series) but they're kind of like Neville and Luna to me -- they've known each other for years and because I loved them both individually, I can totally see how they could fall in love rather easily. It helps that they're more of side characters (rather than the main trio) because that justifies why their relationship had less screen time.
I just think Star Trek V is horribly underrated -- there's so much exploration of love in the film!
From familial love (Sybok and Spock)
To adopted family love (Kirk Spock McCoy)
The love of friendships (Sulu and Chekov)
Romantic love (Scotty and Uhura)
Love for a false prophet (Sybok's followers to him)
It's great. And I wish that people didn't bash the film so horribly.
Unfortunately, I don't have an account here. I have one on Tumblr and I'm a bit hesitant to open a new account here because I barely have time to keep up with that one as it is. And…I'd also feel a bit bad about opening a new account when I've been pulling away from fandom lately (and I've had less time with classes restarting truthfully.)
Re: Vent thread
(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)God, I really wished that I'd watched this movie when that Star Trek movie marathon was on. Only watched Wrath of Khan.
I understand. I'm sorry if I come across as pressuring you into doing it. I just hate that you seem to want to write and share this so bad, but are afraid that a BNF and her fans will bring their drama. Also, I totally want to read it now so my motives aren't entireless selfless. :p

Re: Vent thread
I honestly don't see where she got 'mind-rape' from, but if you block her and her most enthusiastic followers you might not get a lot of lash-back? Even if she goes on her own journal to rant about it, she's just wasting her time. You should let her.
(Or, alternatively, post it under a new username? Or are there any tumblr accounts where you can submit meta and the like?)
