Weird religion question

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there a category for people who basically feel most connected with the Abrahamic faiths, but aren't totally Jewish, Christian or Muslim? Other than Abrahamic? And who almost take it more philosophically/historically than spiritual?

Ultimately I feel closest to Christian, but I also am of the opinion that it is Jesus's teachings, not His precise designation, that matter the most. And in general I don't take anything literally, but I still think that it's very important, and that a lot of the stories have truth in them. I think Abraham and Moses were probably based on real people, for instance, but they were probably many people, and it's possible none of them were actually named Abraham or Moses. Maybe Abraham was the name of a tribe, I dunno.

Is there a term for that, though? Abrahamism? Just plain spiritual?

I think Judeo-Christian is close, but that kind of excludes Islam.

Maybe you can say "I'm Christian, but really not very rigid about it at all" or something?

"I believe in hippy feel good nonsense and next week am probably going to be talking to you about crystals"

I'm torn as to whether to tell you to shut up or laugh because that's my aunt to a tee.

'Hedging their bets' or 'hasn't read any of the religious texts involved' would both work.

"it is Jesus's teachings, not His precise designation, that matter the most"

Pretty sure OP *has* read the book, b/c that's pretty much 100% what it says.

And the Torah and the Koran too? If they have I'll eat my hat.

The first anon said "hasn't read ANY of the texts," not "hasn't read ALL of the texts."

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
well, if OP hasn't read any of those religious texts, let's be honest, she isn't really missing out

Theist is probably the closest label you're going to get.

Most people like that just call themselves Christian, honestly. Because most people who identify as Christian haven't necessarily read the Bible, attended church regularly (and not just on holidays) or know all the little nuances of why Baptists believe X and Presbytarians believe Y. They just have a general belief in select parts of what they think is Christianity and a feeling of "connection", and that's all they need.

Some people say they're more spiritual than religious, and I usually take that to mean they've got vague beliefs in God and Jesus, but haven't gotten into it much.

Considering that one of the 'Apostles' saw Jesus as just a vessel for teaching and not a real person, I don't see anything wrong with that.

Which Apostle was that? Is it a part of the Apocrypha?

Liberal Christianity, some flavors of Quakerism, Christian Unitarian-Universalism come to mind.

Laaaaaaate reply, but chiming in to add to the anon who said Judeo-Christian. You have to be careful which group you get involved with (if you get involved with any of them at all), but as long as you read the book, and try to follow the same example/teachings/commandments in there, that's a start. God will direct you where you need to go, or even let you know you don't need to go anywhere at all.

I'm kind of like that. I just think of myself as culturally Judeo-Christian - not just because my idea of spiriuality is closest to Christianity because that's what I grew up with, but also because Judeo-Christian beliefs and thinking shaped a whole lot of Western culture.
