(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)Re: who does volunteer work here?
Seems a good way to pick up extra skills to help me in my day job, and challenge myself.
Unfortunatley my job whilst heavily supporting reservists has a long waiting list, and only lets a very limited number of people do it at any one time.
Re: who does volunteer work here?
I was a Night Raven, which is pretty much a group of people in hi-viz jackets (With Ravens on 'em) walking around in pairs the city centre night to Saturday/Sunday with first aid kits, condoms, blankets (in the winter) and a kind word. Making sure everyone are safe and have someone who isn't police to talk to if something comes up. Most of the time you just make sure people aren't asleep on a bench and put bandaids on stuff. But we also help people to find a cab, call their parents/friends, give out hugs, and in general are just a calming, not dangerous and non-confrontational person you can come up to and ask about anything and we will try to help you to the best of our abilities.
I also the same nights I did that, spent the rest of the night in an open church where for the most part alcoholics and drug addicts came in and got a cup of coffee/tea and some food + someone to talk to, if they don't have a home they can sleep on the benches and get a blanket. But we also tended to get tourists and random people who had missed the last bus home and needed a spot to stay for a couple of hours until the city woke back up.
I loved doing both things, but sadly they aren't an option anymore and I did it in part for my CV, but mostly because I like people and I like helping people.
Re: who does volunteer work here?
Damn, why does your version of the salvation army sound like some kind of gritty super heroes group.
You sound like you should be fighting gangsters and corrupt politicians outside the reach of the law.
Re: who does volunteer work here?
Oh it isn't the salvation army at all, we have that to, but I prefer to not be associated with people who don't think I should have the same rights as they do. It was connected to a Christian organisation though (but just in the city I lived in, because the city council didn't want it to not be professionally organized), but it was The Church City-Mission, whom are a lot nicer than the Salvation Army. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natteravnene
How do you know I don't already do that?

Re: who does volunteer work here?
(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 04:50 am (UTC)(link)In HS it was required, also it looked good on the CV. Currently, it looks good on my CV, gives me experience.
However, while doing it this time around, I've begun to realize how important (ok, not important, but I'm seeing how needed) the work I'm doing is, and I feel grateful/honored/humbled that I'm being able to help people out with the work I'm doing...I only wish I could do more. It's definitely fueling something good inside me.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 08:09 am (UTC)(link)I finally got back into, year before last. It's so nice. I love volunteering, especially with kids.
