Is this addiction?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
If I can't have any chocolate then I become angry and restless. I have literlly begged someone to give me some before. I would obtain it out of a trash can if I had to. If there's none available then my mood swings unpredictably for a week afterwards.

I once gave it up for two years and life felt grey and worthless the whole time. I dreamt about it every night the whole two years.

Yes. But it probably also means your body is lacking something that's in the chocolate. Talk to your doctor?

I tried, but they laughed at me. I don't blame them, the whole thing sounds ridiculous. :/

Your suggestion of my body needing something from the chocolate is a good one. I'll start looking along those lines, thank you.

AYRT

He is. I changed doctors after he dismissed my boyfriend's alarming weight loss as 'nothing to worry about'. It turns out he had diabetes. :/ Unfortunately the experience put me off asking anyone else about it. I probably should.

Chocolate contains magnesium. Next time you're craving chocolate, try a banana first and see if the craving goes away.

It's not going to be magnesium as I practically live on bananas and nuts but thank you.

At the very least, you're dependent on it to make you happy, which isn't good. Have you spoken to anyone about it?

I have, but most take it as a joke which I can understand. It seems silly even to me and I'm the one dealing with it.

Can you tell yourself "I'm not going to eat chocolate" and then actually not eat chocolate?

If the answer is no, congratulations, you have an addiction. If the answer is yes, then you don't have an addiction but you might have a dependency.

I've heard that there a therapists who talk to people with their dependencies/addictions to food. Unfortunately, I haven't the slightest clue where you can start with finding resources to find help on this. But TBH you'd think talking to your doctor about it would get them to want to help you instead of laugh at you. =( I hope you find a doctor who can help you or at least find a good solution to this.

Cocoa solids contain theobromine, phenethylamine and caffeine - all of which can affect the nervous system.

Sounds like a chemical dependency, but the two years without it seems like something more.

I'm a little addicted to chocolate myself, or at least I have made it a regular part of my diet. I gave it up for a while this winter, and that was mostly fine, but I didn't stick with it. I felt like I was eating more calories to compensate, and other caffeine sources aren't the same.
