LOL I can relate to the "I don't like this thing." "You don't? Well, try this exact thing you don't like, because it'll probably change your mind." For example, recently I said that I don't like Zach Snyder films, so that's why I've never seen "Man of Steel," because chances are, I'm probably not going to like it. Also, given that I'm more partial to Marvel, this film already has A LOT going against it for me as a viewer of the film. What happens? A guy I work with scoffs and says, "I don't care that you don't like Zack Synder movies. You need to see MoS because it's the shit. It's an awesome film." I wanted to roll my eyes, but I only did it mentally. Another guy did the same thing with the Planet of the Apes films. Him: "Saw the new Apes film. It's the best film I've seen this year." Me: "I've never been much of a fan. Saw the Heston one as a kid, and saw the Burton one when I was 13. Didn't see Serkis/Franco one, not really my thing." Him: "You need to watch them! They're the best." Me: "...*mental eyeroll*"

LOL I was kind of the opposite with LOTR and HP. I really loved LOTR when the first film came out. I began reading the books and all that. Whenever I'd bring it up people would be like, "I saw the new Harry Potter film/read the Harry Potter book(s)," as if I'd be like, "OMG YEAH!" when I didn't really care for it. Funnily enough, a year later, I ended up enjoying the HP series, but I agree, LOTR and HP only really share the "fantasy" genre together. It's like assuming that you'd be a fan of all animated films ever made just because you liked an animated Disney film. The worst was that everyone knew that I liked both LOTR and HP when the Twilight films became popular and they ALL kept asking me about the Twilight books and films, and I would have to kindly say, "I've only read the first book, and um...I didn't really like it."

Man of Steel is actually the worst superhero movie that's come out in years, so it's good you managed to avoid it.

Your Planet of the Apes bit is actually a bit off, because in this case Rise of the Planet of the Apes is very different from the original movies and the shit-tastic Burton movie. And much, much better.
