Whoa!

I just made a new dreamwidth account and it said the birthday was required by law and I MUST enter my real birthday? Anyone know when that happened? I've always just made up birthdays and said the year was 1902 or something.

Hmm, I don't remember the 'required by law' bit, but generally sites want your actual birth-date. I doubt there's any way for them to tell if the one you give them is your actual birthday so it probably wouldn't make any real difference. Also, you can hide it on your profile if you don't want people seeing it.

Congrats on the account, though?

My assumption is it's usually a cover-your-ass thing in case someone decides to sue them because their 14 year old was looking at porn on there.

MTE, I don't think OP should worry about it. I'm sure it's something the site has to include legally as part of the sign up process, so you can probably even fib on it and no one would give a damn.

Oh, heh. I forgot about this thread. I wasn't really worried, it was just weird. I only put in the weird birth years for my own amusement. Thank you! It's actually just a new sock account, lol.

How would they ever know? Are they gonna research you? I've seen some places where if you put in a birth year that makes you over 100, it won't accept it.... And I didn't even use my legal name to sign up for DW, so I don't think you have to worry about the b-day thing.

Nah I wasn't really worried it was just surprising. It's not the first time I've made a DW account and I've never seen that message.
