Does it matter when we're clearly talking about hypothetical situations here? I'm happy to help people when I can, but my time is limited. If someone has a question that can easily be answered by spending five minutes Googling, then I'd prefer to spend my time helping someone who has a question that can't be answered by Googling.

It's kind of baffling how many people in this thread get deeply offended at suggestions that people ought to learn how to do basic research for themselves. That's a really useful skill that you'll be able to use the rest of your life, why not learn?

I can't see anyone being offended at that. Gaiman's OP was worried they would look weird for doing the research.
