She may have some sort of contract she can't get out of re: BBT, but if she doesn't, WHY would she stay on that show? The females are just written terribly.

Hers started out a promising character, too. Every bit as intelligent and awkward and standoffish and possibly asexual as Sheldon. Then all of a suddenly she was boy crazy and loved shopping and became bouncy and sexually inappropriate. I have similar problems with Bernadette... she started out kind of interesting - intelligent, a bit awkward but sweet... now her running joke is that she's a nagging clone of Howard's mom who just awkwardly hangs around Penny for occasional punchlines. Penny herself has, at least, been a disaster from day one. I miss characters like Stephanie and Leslie but I'm glad they left the show before they were subject to shitty writing (wait, no... they still were... Stephanie became SUDDEN CLINGY CRAZY GIRLFRIEND in order to get rid of her... and the same suddenly happened to Leslie... UGH)

She's a single, homeschooling mom and she needs health insurance. That was the only reason she started acting again instead of working in her PhD field; she wanted time with her kids but maybe do enough acting to keep them in insurance. She fell into TBBT and now she'd be a fool to walk away from it, especially because it's not easy for her to get a lot of acting work (with what she refers to as an "extremely character" face.)

have you SEEN how stupidly huge that show is? fuck my worldviews if i had her paycheck i'd be right up there with her and i'm all about that feminism and shit. if you need a paycheck you need a fucking paycheck.

I don't personally think it's worth it, no matter what the pay. YMMV, of course.

well good for you but i've been homeless and starving before. you damn right i'd pretend to be a fictional character in a world that has shitty writing if it meant eating regularly and sleeping in a bed

That and supporting two kids.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-23 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Me too but it's not like that's her only option to support herself. She has a science Ph.D, she could even go teach highschoolers science if she can't get a tenured position at a college. That gives insurance and will keep a roof over one's head.

But that goes specifically against her priorities; she was supposed to work as a research assistant or a teacher, but that is a nine-to-five job, and she's homeschooling her kids. Doing Big Bang allows her a lot more flexibility, which is especially important now that she's divorced and has primary custody.

So which issue is more important? Is the sexism on the show so awful that she's supposed to ignore the myriad reasons she decided to homeschool and use attachment parenting to form a deep bond with her two little boys? The woman has defined herself as a mother first, and she is not and never will be the only mother to keep a demeaning job if that's what's better for her kids.

I listened to a live Star Talk show (podcast) (Neil deGrasse Tyson) on which she was a guest and she shared that she does teach homeschooled students, too. I can't recall if it was science or math but the kids were geeked to have her be their teacher.

I probably would too, but I wouldn't slam Disney movies for doing the same things the show I'm working on does.

I believe it just shifted to a million per episode for the main cast members.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-23 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the 3 leads (Jim Parsons (with 4 Emmy awards), Kaley Cuoco, and Johnny Galecki) are making 1 million per episode. Simon Helberg and Kunal Naayar (Howard & Raj) make around $100,000 per episode, and Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) and Mayim are coming in around $60,000. (Up from $25,000ish last year.)

Now, don't get me wrong - I make $70k per YEAR, not per week - even if they do only work about half the year, so it's really more money than I can dream of making. But, I'm not paying an agent, publicist, and assistant, and my job is more stable - actors have to plan for potentially long periods of unemployment, etc.

I just wanted to point out it's a far cry from a million per week.

omg you.

Lol I can't get over how whiny F!S is over BBT. No, it's not Shakespeare, but it's a decent show for its genre - cheap laughs, easy to watch, goofy characters. Like, you say the "females" (also, weird wording, why not say women?) are written terribly, but the men aren't written any better.

The show makes me laugh (and I'm a woman, and an actual geek). It's not the best show in the world, not by a long shot, but the butthurt is kind of uncalled for imo. And fuck do you realize this cast gets like million dollar per episode paychecks? I'm not sure there are many shows I wouldn't do for that kind of money. And BBT is harmless, as far as selling your soul goes.
