Re: I just need some perspectives

Maybe. It just makes me sad because she's saved and gone to cons with other people before, but as soon as it comes to this one with me, she's like "nope". If she was paying for rent or actually paying for college, that would be one thing, but she's not paying for rent, and she has a fund for college, so none of her paycheck has to go to rent/school, and she's even dismissed the most affordable one because she just doesn't want to go to any cons now.

It has NOTHING to do with you. You sound very egocentric.

I know it doesn't. But knowing the lengths she's gone to to cosplay with other people, it hurts, even though it's stupid.

I don't understand something: you say she's short on money for tuition, but then you say she's not paying for school. If she's not paying for school, how can she be short on tuition? Or, if she's short for tuition and needs to save up, why do you say she's not paying for school?

I'm sorry, let me clarify: she has a bank account that her parents set up with money for the first couple years of school, plus she has a bunch of scholarships. She panicked because her tuition was $600 more than she though, and she had to pull more money out of her account than she thought she would have to.

Does that make sense?

Okay, that makes sense. But that also makes it sound like she has a limited amount of money that she might have to budget pretty tightly if she wants it to last, which would definitely be a reason to cut out some 'extra' fun things like cons.

Yes, this. Just because your parents are providing the money for you to live on doesn't mean you don't have to budget it.

I would never ask her to pay for the con out of the money she'd gotten from her parents, if that makes any difference.

It can be a weird area, getting money from your parents that way (Unless you are a shameless mooch, most aren't).

But there is nothing worse then having to ask your generous parents for MORE.

This happened to me twice, once because of ignorance and bad decisions and the second time just plain misfortune. The first was one of the most shameful things in my life. The second was far less my fault (save that I should have set more aside in case shit) so I didn't feel as bad but after swearing THIS WOULD NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN it was still pretty horrible.

I worked very hard after that to keep an umbrella so it'd never happen again. Thusfar I've succeeded. Certainly won't judge others for being careful with their cash.

If it was a situation where she had been planning to pay for the con out of her parent's money, I feel like I'd have different feelings on this, but that was never the case.

It's possible she has anxiety around money, which isn't always based on how much you objectively have. As a student, if I'd been hit with a tuition increase I might have panicked and decided I needed to cut something out.

It's also possible her reaction was a kneejerk panicky one, and when she calms down she might have a different perspective. But honestly, and I speak as someone who always watches my money even though I make a good salary--this almost certainly isn't about you, OP.
