I don't know but I read a real neat Slate article this morning (sorry, I can't recall which article) that brought up the question of how was language developed: how did the second person understand what the first person said?

That's really interesting question. What comes to mind is people developing language as a group - a party of hunters developing words for things for example. I'd bet twenty bucks that language creation then happened in a similar way to language creation now.
