tags on tumblr: how do they actually work?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-23 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
So, I made a post on my tumblr, and I tagged it with the appropriate things, like...my ship. but when I went and looked at the tag for my ship, there were two things: my post isn't showing up, and posts that are against the ship and that haven't even tagged for it show up.

what's the deal? Do you have to be popular to show up in a search? and does tagging even matter? if I mention a tag in a post but don't actually tag it, does that show up in a search?

1) Only the first five things tagged actually show up in the tags.

2) The search is kind of random. Usually it's only the more popular posts that show up first. If you're wanting to check the tags, make sure you're looking under www.tumblr.com/tagged/thethingyouvetagged.

As for the other stuff, I'm not sure. And sometimes Tumblr just screws things up, especially if they're down or about to go down.

the tag for my ship is in the first five (in fact...it's the very first tag). :(

in my experience if you search for a tag, it won't bother showing that tag because all the posts you are seeing in fact have it. I was confused till I went to a persons page to see the post, and there the tag was.

Allso guy below me, to search chronologically, use http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/yourtag

When last I checked, the 'search' function on Tumblr is these days set to search ANYWHERE IN THE POST, not just the tags. You can manually type in tumblr /tagged/yourtag, or search and click on the tag you want in one of the posts that comes up.

Also, they might have changed this but for a long time only the first 5 tags showed up in the official tags. So if you went "#i #hate #this #guy #so much #This Guy" then it wouldn't show up in the #This Guy tag at all. Only on your own blog.

The search is not the same as the tag page. The search is the most viewed posts and it includes words in the post itself, not just the tags. the tag page is all that is tagged. Make sure that you go to tumblr.com/tagged/yourship'snamehere instead of tumblr.com/search/etc

When you search a tag, it doesn't show that tag on the results. (Easy to show by clicking on tag on a post that only has a few short tags, so you can be sure it's not just getting swamped by the other tags.)

Everybody's mentioned that the search page is different from the tag, and that posts are only sorted by the first five tags, so I hope that's got you sorted, but also: if you have no followers (and I mean no followers, not even one), nothing you post will show up in the tags. (Which is a bit of a catch-22; I guess they just expect you to follow people and hope they follow you back?)

holy fucking shit that makes me just want to quit. I've followed lots of people, reblogged posts, sent asks to try to start conversations, but I still don't have anyone. and why would I? I just started out and I've got like no content. but how the fuck do you get anyone into your content if your content won't show up in a fucking search?

really this is just kind of making me hate tumblr all the more. the only reason I signed up is because that's where my fandom is, but what's even the point? am I just supposed to flail desperately until someone takes pity on me (I so don't want to do that)?

You could make a throw-away account and follow your current account, so tags show up. I know it isn't ideal, but it's possible.

I somehow managed to get two living people I don't know to follow me even though I don't have a single post, so it happens. Wish I could trade you.
