Good question, OP. I'm curious why you actually seem to care how many kudos someone else gets [also, are you like...going through and actively looking at them without reading or...?]

I think a lot of people use kudos counts within a fandom to decide which fics to read. . .

Though I think the secret is kind of silly; maybe it's just a sign something got recced outside of AO3 and attracted a lot of readers who don't have accounts. Guest isn't the same as 'anon.'

Yep, I definitely use kudos counts to decide which fics to read.

Anon you replied to

Yeah, I know - but the way the OP specifies using the anon v signed in kudos to determine the quality of the fic. So it's like they go to the fic just to look at the kudos and *that* seems weird to me.

Stop sorting by kudos?

It's not a useful way for me to sort, anyway, since I'm usually trying to avoid the pointless AUs.

OP

I do use kudos to determine whether I should read a fic (well, kudos vs hits), and I've been "burned" in the past by stories that seemed to have a very promising hits-to-kudos ratio (<10) but which turned out to be poorly-written IMO. My hypothesis about the anon kudos vs named user kudos was something I came up with after seeing one too many of these stories.

I think that's more to do with a lot of people in fandom looking for specific things, and caring less for quality and more that those things appear in the fics they read. For example, one of the higher rated fics in my fandom has god-awful writing but is one of the few fics that exists for a particular pairing. People have rated it the way they have because it's a spot of light in an otherwise dark room.
