I most often write for smaller fandoms so I don't get a huge amount of kudos to begin with, but I've noticed my kinky/smutty fics tend to get more anonymous kudos than anything else I've written, so I'm inclined to agree with this.

yeah -- my unabashed id-fic full of kink gets LOADS more anonymous comments.

but overall, i'd be careful with the assumption the OP makes: fandom is vast; it is not the AO3 posse alone. being linked/rec'd/discussed outside this particular corner will also yield high kudo counts without associated names.
