I agree about Spock especially.

He just seems so…mean and petty in the first film (even before his planet is lost and he somewhat has an excuse).

Like that thing about bringing up Kirk's dad. Or ignoring that Uhura wants to be on the Enterprise and putting her on the Farragut. Isn't he supposed to lover her.

I feel like if we had seen them fall in love, it would have been more sympathetic.

Uhura wasn't that awful of a character, but compared to her character from TOS (who I've always adored), she just was harder for me to like.
And Spock just seemed so angry, and asshole-ish. I didn't like him in the new movies at all, which sucks because I wanted to like him :(
Any Spock/Uhura relationship should have been way more touching. And it just wasn't.

I didn't mind Uhura, but I think there were some definite missteps.

As annoying as Kirk was, it rubbed me the wrong way that she called him a hick and said he had sex with farm animals. Along with her presumption that he wouldn't know what xenolinguistics was, it just made her seem kind of…elitist(?) I guess. And that she had a thing against people from the country…as though they're uncultured.

I think her constant sniping with Kirk didn't help either because it just made the tone of both their scenes so negative.

I also think it was a mistake not to develop her relationship with Spock onscreen because when she goes to confront him about her placement, the way she's talking to him really shocked me. This is her professor and commanding officer and without knowing that she's also his girlfriend, my first impression of that scene was that she was being incredibly disrespectful. This wouldn't have been the case at all, though, if I had known about their relationship beforehand.

I don't think she gets it quite as bad as Spock, but there's definitely room for improvement. Instead of having her be pissed at Kirk, I wish they would have given her more scenes with Spock earlier in the film.

>compared to her character from TOS

It's pretty obvious the creators of the reboot never watched Uhura in TOS. So disappointing.

True. I think they got all their TOS reference points via fan T-shirts or something.

A tribble! "KHAAAAN!" Scotty likes to drink! Redshirts! Kirk's a womanizer who breaks all the rules. McCoy says "Dammit I'm a doctor not a..."

Seriously, that's what it feels like they did.

Fear for Star Wars VII, then. Han is a lech! Leia is a bobblehead! Chewy is a walking carpet! Luke has daddy issues! It's gonna be a hot mess.

well, probably not since Abrams actually watched and liked Star Wars

Oh no I read that wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Or they watched it, and just missed the entire fucking point.

That bit about not putting her on the Enterprise particularly bothered me. Because LOGICALLY he would put the best student on the flagship, never mind that someone might think it was favoritism, he would just be being logical. Instead we got a really clumsy way to say "Look! These two are dating!"
