And books are just printed letters.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-23 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
True but printed letters are pretty much universal.

(I'm deaf, music is a little...foreign to me :P)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-23 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
is art just color?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-23 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, please explain to me how I'm missing the point about music when it's not something I experience in the same way you do.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-23 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Please explain to me how you're putting down an entire form of art just because it's not something you can personally experience.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-23 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
To me, it's literally a distorted mess of sounds with strange pitches. I find it bizarre that that mess is what people get so riled up about and put the creators of that mess on a pedestal to practically worship.

I can put down a entire form of art if I want, just in the way you're welcome to dismiss a different form of art should you chose because you don't experience it in the same way those who praise it do.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, you're dumb.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
This really is the best possible response.

...you're arguing with a deaf person about music appreciation. Don't get me wrong, it's amusing but I think it's perfectly okay for a deaf person to dismiss music...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's okay for a deaf person to dismiss music, too. I don't think it's okay for a deaf person to go, "I can't experience music, so I think you're all stupid for liking it."

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
where did they say people were stupid for liking music?

There have been deaf musicians. Are they wrong for enjoying music?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
There are some deaf people who would say that they are. There's an antagonism in some circles for the "hearing world," and a feeling like one should be "true" to Deaf culture.

That's a really egocentric way of thinking. Just like printed letters or visual arts can't be experienced by blind people, music can't be experienced by you. That doesn't mean it's a worthless mess. That's saying the problem lies in the object, when in reality the problem lies in you (not that it's your fault, of course).

Music isn't a mess; YOU are the one who can't appreciate it. And that's okay.

That said, I do agree that worshiping musicians is a little too much, but whatever floats people's boats...

I would argue it's hard to appreciate something if you don't know what it is. It's like telling a blind person they MUST appreciate the beauty of the piece of art when how do THEY know it's beautiful? Just telling someone it's beautiful doesn't make it so.

Yes, but not knowing what it is also automatically disqualifies you from making pronouncements on its value. Especially if your pronouncement is that it's worthless.

They don't have to appreciate it. But saying that everyone else is stupid for appreciating it is pretty shitty and self-centered.

And to someone partially blind, paintings are just splotches of colors if that, so why do people have entire buildings dedicated to them. Or how about your writing? It's just letters on a page.

The fact you feel the NEED to put them down seems very sour grapes of you. You are basically complaining that people like something you don't. Which is fine until you put down everyone who does because "WEH WEH IT'S JUST NOOOOIIIIISE WEEEEEH LIKE THE THING I LIKE"

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Dude. You need to definitely get some '80s heavy metal and play it LOUD. There won't be as much noise (I'm guessing you have S/N loss?) but if you can get something with a good, driving beat, you might enjoy it more than the noise.

I agree the whole celebrity musician culture is off-putting.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not deaf, but I am somewhat indifferent to music, and let me tell ya it turns you into a fucking weirdo pariah. I mean, one of the big get-to-know-you questions is 'so, what kind of music do you like?' And then I sputter and stammer and inevitably tell them that I like all kinds of music, no one genre.

Loving music is considered universal and important, like it defines humanity or something. People are moves to tears by music, feel connected and alive through music. I've had people ask me what's wrong with me, because I prefer to sit in silence when home alone. If I have music on in the car, it is for background noise, and I hardly pay attention. I don't want to talk about musicians, or new bands or old bands. Not because I'm above the celebrity and commercial aspect, but because these are aspects of a thing I'm not invested in. Like sports. I don't care about athletes, because I don't care about sports. There is music I like, a few songs here and there, some bands. But it's like.. enjoying a single thing from a genre of movies you generally don't care for. That one romantic comedy you enjoy, even though rom coms don't matter to you. I read and write and enjoy art and nature and cinema- and music will forever be a nice but entirely incidental facet of my life.

I don't care about Amy Winehouse, or most any musician, their legacy or great gifts, because music ranks very low for me. And people are really weirded out and disapproving of it. It is an anomaly. Try googling it. About the only thing that comes up is an article written about non-music fans by some regular joe-human who thinks they're all inhuman and spends the piece casually insulting them. And then there's a Yahoo question, where all the answers are people suggesting they just try hard to find music they like, lol!! You're not gonna win here, pal. If you said you didn't care for cinema, or sports, people'd leave you be. But music is serious business, and even hearing loss isn't an excuse apparently. :|

NA

I feel 100% the same way about music as you.

I've got into arguments with people because they insist I do like music, I'm just being pretentious.

Let me tell you about how much of a special snowflake I am.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, we get it, people like you and dismissive!anon are persecuted snowflakes outcast by cruel society. Did you just not read the whole part where they decided because they don't get it, it's stupid and worthless? Where actual other deaf people are telling them that's not on?

As someone who is myself hard of hearing, THIS 100%

Just because you don't get it doesn't make it worthless.

Really? Not even music with a good headbanging, wall-pounding beat? Not something you can enjoy with any neighbours in a 1km radius, mind, but you should be able to feel it in your bones (try leaning the back of your head against the speakers of an old boombox).
