It looks like the historic "South" to me--Florida, the Gulf Coast, the Valley and Ridge, the Piedmont, the southeastern coastal plain. He didn't even include all of Texas or Arkansas. Part of his thesis is that the ancestral Southern longleaf pine savannas and pine flatwoods ecosystems are actually grassland ecosystems. And there are apparently many different kinds of grass-dominated communities that are overlooked because their acreage is not great, but they're unusually rich in plants and animals that are found nowhere else, so their biodiversity per unit area is some of the highest in North America.
