This other girl in a game THAT NEVER HAPPENED is an emotionally unstable woman of average height who is crippled by extremely severe daddy issues and a near-Elektra Complex for her surrogate military father figure, to the point where she's effectively a self-harmer for not activating all her goddamn abilities at once. At least the other games came up with reasons why she was depowered!. She also has memory problems that manifest in an inability to keep track of the fact that her arch nemesis' primary gimmick is coming back to life after he dies (It's only happened like, 4 times) rendering her helpless upon seeing him until her male friends rescue her (also they apparently forgot they literally did this exact fucking thing in the metroid zero comic years earlier: Her getting over her Ridley PTSD was an actual plot point but apparently it was only good for so many resurrections? You'd think killing the guy would, you know, bolster that. Ridley ain't shit, you keep shooting him and he keeps DYING.)
Also, it wasn't a metroid game. Linear exploration with PLACES SEALED OFF AS YOU PROGRESS.
Prime, a game 10 years before this, proved you could do metriod justice in 3d. There was no excuse.
I like the idea of exploring Samus' lack of family and her desire to find one, but goddamn this was not how you do it.

It's kinda one of those things where you also have to wonder, "Does Metroid really need this much backstory"? I mean hell, look what happened to Star Fox and F-Zero when they tried to add deeper plots to both: they fucked up both so bad, one series (possibly) got the 'Reset' button hit a second time, the other has been DOA for 10+ years thanks to a shitty anime + anime tie-in game that tanked hard upon arrival in North America.
And the thing about giving Samus a more "fleshed out" personality -for lack of a better term- is never going to live up to the characterizations (or lackthereof) that people have developed for the character in their own minds over the years.
I can't fault them for at least trying to tell a Metroid game with a larger story (and again, I think if they had hired writers who knew what the hell they were doing, it might have stood a chance of being above average), and there's probably a cultural dissonance here in regards to Samus and Adam's relationship (or so I've heard from people who've tried to do mental gymnastics to excuse this game) but damn, they beefed it so hard it's ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 08:01 am (UTC)(link)I wanted badass bounty hunter Samus.
I got anime waifu Samus.
Not all that surprising, considering what direction they've taken her appearance in, lately.
But no fucking thank you.
